Between the band and the bouncers lies a thin strip of hallowed ground on which careers are made in a flash. Kevin Cummins began photographing musicians as a student in the 1970s, spent ten years as the NME’s chief photographer and is now one of the UK’s most revered portrait photographers. Tomorrow marks the publication of a limited edition of his Joy Division images, entitled ‘Juvenes’. Angela Meredith turns the focus on the man and his work.

Kevin Cummins’ career got off to an early start: both his father and grandfather were keen photographers and had darkrooms at home.
