Heavy metal is still viewed with suspicion in Botswana, but dedicated metal-heads are defying the criticism by continuing to wear leather even in the heat. Fans of the music genre have adopted a certain style of dress which includes all leather clothing, black cowboy boots, hats and props. For the musicians and their fans, their outfits are a form of artistic expression which not even the heat can disturb.
‘People think that we are rough, evil creatures, but [metal] teaches us to be free with expression, to do things on our own,’ Vulture, vocalist of the band Overthrust, told The Guardian.
