You have to walk/travel for miles to plots, carrying bags of spray paint, face adverse environments, hang out in bushes for hours, scratching up your legs… with rats scurrying about, get filthy, completely ruin your clothes. Yet, despite being a less than glamorous pastime, more and more women are taking up graffiti.

Once considered the sole pursuit of vandalous teenagers and hip hop loving hoodies, graffiti is currently experiencing its renaissance. You could say it all started with Banksy, whose politically motivated scrawlings have been exhibited in galleries all over the world and snapped up by stars such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Increasingly, graffiti has been picked up by marketing men looking to add some instant youth credibility to their brands. And now the girls are getting in on the action with Frisson Gallery’s groundbreaking exhibition of all female graffiti artists, the first of its kind in the UK.
