That’s the lesson from a list of the world’s best selling authors since 2001 compiled by Nielsen (US) Book Data.

Top of the Nielsen list is thriller writer James Patterson, whose Alex Cross detective books have sold more than 300 million copies and are figured to account for one out of every 17 hardcover novels purchased in the United States.
