Whiteley’s Chelsea Hotel painting returns to Oz

Offered by Menzies Art Brands later this month, Brett Whiteley’s painting "paid" as rent to the Hotel Chelsea is up for grabs.

It’s the huge painting that Brett Whiteley apparently handed over to then manager of New York’s infamous Hotel Chelsea, Stanley Bard, as part-payment for rent for his extended stay in 1968.

And with the title Paul Gauguin on the Eve of His Attempted Suicide, Tahiti (1968), it is clearly the “stuff of legends”, a provenance that Chairman of Menzies Art Brands, Rod Menzie, is counting on.
