New York’s Met lauds $1bn Cubist gift

A gift of $1 billion worth of Cubist works from cosmetics tycoon and philanthropist Leonard Lauder looks set to transform The Met.

Dozens of works by Pablo Picasso make up part of a $1 billion collection of Cubist art gifted to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art by cosmetics tycoon and philanthropist Leonard Lauder.

Lauder spent 40 years putting together the collection, which includes 33 Picassos, 17 Braques, 14 works by Gris and 14 Légers. Valued at more than $1 billion, it is one of the most noteworthy gifts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s history.
