Australian arts workers better off than British

Heading off to London is a well-trodden path for Australians working in the arts but salaries, satisfaction and public-funding are all better Down Under, the ArtsHub Salary Surveys show.

All that glistens is not gold in London’s glamourous theatre district.

A generation ago you were not a real Australian artist until you had done a stint in London. Barry Humphries, Brett Whitely, Robert Helpmann and, more recently, Kylie Minogue all began their working lives in Australia but headed to Britain to ‘crack the big time’, some never to return. Arts managers and production workers did the same.
