Leo Villareal’s long-time project ‘The Bay Lights’ has finally come to life, after the 25,000 LED lights used in the project were switched on for the first time, simultaneously illuminating San Francisco’s Bay Bridge and making history as the world’s largest LED light sculpture.
‘This piece is incredibly accessible, you don’t have to buy a ticket, you don’t have to go into a building, it’s there and available,’ Villareal told Bay City News. ‘I see it as a focal point, something people can gather around. People who have never talked to each other are suddenly talking, and it’s literally creating community. It’s almost become a digital campfire.’
