- Rare opportunity to bring artistic vision and leadership to a state flagship theatre company
- A key role in one of the largest and best regarded arts organisations in Australia
- Make a unique contribution to the cultural life of Queensland and Australia
With a vision to lead from Queensland and a mission to create collective experiences that change lives, Queensland Theatre is one of Australia’s largest and best regarded theatre companies.
With the upcoming 2020 season Queensland Theatre completes 50 years as the major theatre company in the state and one of the most productive in Australia when measured by income, box office, number of main stage productions/year and artists and staff employed.
In that time it has been fortunate to have been guided in its artistic vision and growth by outstanding Australian theatre makers including Robyn Nevin, Michael Gow, Wesley Enoch and current Artistic Director Sam Strong.
Each year, the Company produces a subscription season of 7-9 mainstage productions, ranging from classics to international hits and new Australian works, with an overall commitment to diverse programming including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories. Gender parity between writers and directors has been a key achievement during the leadership of Sam Strong.
A major milestone was reached in October 2018 with the opening of the Company’s first home theatre, the 350 seat Bille Brown Theatre. This state-of-the-art venue offers audiences a new, corner stage venue in Brisbane, the perfect environment for experiencing contemporary theatre. The theatre also opens up exciting collaborative opportunities with companies around Australia and internationally, with similarly configured performances spaces.
In 2018, around 150,000 people saw a Queensland Theatre production in Brisbane and regional Queensland, interstate and internationally. Over 17,000 young people attended the theatre or participated in workshops, acting ensembles or writing programs.
We are now seeking appoint our seventh Artistic Director to provide artistic leadership for the next 3 years as we go into our 50th season.
