Looking out at the throng down the Main Street  of the world’s Art Deco capital on opening night, one has the sensation of really being in the 1930s –  or at least on a giant stage set providing an authentic equivalent. The small New Zealand city has dressed its trademark Art Deco architecture to kill and is reaping the benefits of the 1930s’ rebuild following a tragic earthquake.
