Join artist and writer Tom de Freston for the launch of his moving new book, Strange Bodies, the account of de Freston and his wife’s deeply challenging journey to parenthood, and his experience of art through this time.

Addressed directly to De Freston’s wife, novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave, Strange Bodies turns to art to make sense of their experience of grief after the loss of seven pregnancies. Harrowing, hopeful, deeply loving, De Freston’s latest work is a testament to the power of art in our lives.

Tom de Freston is a visual artist based in Oxford. Among various fellowships and residencies he has held a Leverhulme residency at Cambridge University, a Levy Plumb Residency at Christ’s College and the inaugural Creative Fellowship at Birmingham University. His work is regularly exhibited, and is represented in numerous public and private collections. He is the author of a work of non-fiction, Wreck, and with Kiran Millwood Hargrave he is the co-author of Orpheus and Eurydice and Julia and the Shark.

De Freston will be in conversation with Hettie Judah, the chief art critic on the i, a regular contributor to the Guardian’s arts pages, and a columnist for Apollo magazine. She also writes for Frieze, Art Quarterly, Art Monthly and ArtReview, among others.

The discussion will be followed by a book signing. Doors will open from 6:45pm.
