Situated adjacent to Focal Point Gallery in the centre of Southend-on-Sea, this permanent outdoor video facility presents a unique and exciting context for the presentation of moving image at the centre of a public square.
Big Screen Southend presents a year-round programme of artist moving image, live transmissions, short and feature-length film. Managed and curated by Focal Point Gallery, the screen is a partnership project between Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, South Essex College and University of Essex. The screen has both audio and visual capabilities and measures 6.22 x 3.5m in size.
Open to all, Big Screen Southendparticularly welcomes individuals who may not have previously had the opportunity to show their film or video work before. There are no thematic terms to adhere to with your submission, only an interest to show work to an immediate public audience that pass-through the square on a daily basis.
A single commission will be awarded from the open call, with the successful individual awarded £1,500 to create a new film work, developed with Focal Point Gallery and launched later in the year. From the open-call, an additional six applicants will be chosen to screen pre-existing work, each receiving a fee of £250 and taking place either later this year or early 2021.
To apply, provide a link to a full version of your video work so that it can be viewed online, though works in process will also be accepted. An accompanying statement of no more than 250 words outlining your proposal and a short biography is strongly encouraged. Due to the public context of Big Screen Southend, please keep in mind that all content must be adhere to PG ratings and be suitable for a single channel screening.
