This Call for artists, promoted by Explora, the Children’s Museum of Rome is addressed to all enthusiasts of letterpress printing, students, professionals, graphic designers or illustrators aged 18 years or over at the deadline date (January 20th, 2019), being residents in one of the Member States of the European Union (*including The United Kingdom), or the EEA (Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Norway).
This Call for artists – THE CHILDREN’S RIGHTS is aimed at selecting 3 (three) works of art representing 3 children’s rights:
- Right of expression;
- Right to education;
- Right to play.
The winning works will be exhibited in the museum’s hall throughout 2019 – a free-admission space open all days, except on the Museum’s closing days.
Works should be made using a mixed media technique, inserting in the work’s composition (elements made with the traditional manual printing techniques as traditional letterpress printing – with movable type, relief printing as linocut, woodcut, chancography – engraving on copper or zinc plates) and computer-made graphic digital elements (textures, illustrations).
The manually made elements must then be scanned and digitally composed.

CREATIVE MAKERS: kids’ fablabs for letterpress & printing inspired by tinkering and making (CREAM) is a project co-funded by Creative Europe, a programme of the European Union, which aims at creating 4 fablabs for schools and families, to reinvent letterpress and printing through tinkering and making.
The CREAM partnership includes Explora, the children’s museum of Rome (Italy), Neapolis, a maker space in Vilanova i La Geltrù (Spain), Labora, a space for hand-on letterpress and printing workshops in Tallin (Estonia), National Print Museum, a museum fully dedicated to printing in Dublin (Ireland).
In 2018, CREAM organised local events to make children, schools, families and the general public aware of the children’s rights by setting up workshops on the art of printing and letterpress reinvented in the “making” way, to celebrate the International Children’s Day.
