Calling all Artists: KounterKulture art gallery has launched revolutionary submission process for aspiring artists.
Traditionally, artists submit photos of their work to galleries, who act as gatekeepers. The gallery decides which works they will show and which ones they pass on.
KounterKulture, an online gallery based on the concepts of Web 2.0, is looking to change that process.
Don Smith the owner of Opus Art had this to say about artists submission process,
“ Really, when it comes down to it our choices as gallery owners are based on our knowledge from previous experiences. We have gut feelings on what sells and what doesn’t but it’s not science. It’s more an art, deciding what artists to show or not.”
Artist Hush had this to say about the process,
“It’s really discouraging when you’re starting out as an artist and every gallery you go to says no, no, no. Then when you finally show your work you have an in and everyone says yes but it takes you five years to reach that point. The process of one person judging the work that you know is good, and hoping that they agree, can be soul destroying.”
In an attempt to change this process KounterKulture is giving the general public the opportunity to vote on which artists deserve a chance to have their work shown.
“We are relying on the Web 2.0 concept - that large amounts of people make better decisions then a few.. We just apply this to artwork and let people decide what good art is and what doesn’t make the cut.” Doug Rocks-Macqueen, KounterKulture technician.
KounterKulture is launching a competition whereby artists can submit their work and have it judged by the public - not just one person. This new process runs until the end of March and is open to the first 50 artists who post their work.
The work with the most votes at the end of March wins at least a month’s posting of their work on KounterKulture. This can be extend indefinitely if their work is popular.
