An art auction held by Gallery Violet has successfully raised almost £1000 for Oxfam’s East African appeal.
Large parts of East Africa are now facing the world's worst food crisis. More than 12 million people in East Africa are facing desperate food shortages following the worst drought in 60 years. Rains have failed for successive seasons, and families across Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are struggling to find anything to eat or drink. Hundreds of thousands of livestock have already died, casuing food prices to soar. Oxfam is currently holding it’s largest ever appeal on behalf of the continent, aiming to raise £50 million. According to Oxfam, just £25 will provide clean water for 175 people for 1 day.
Gallery Violet's added the Oxfam drive to its list of missions, which includes the seeking out and engagement with artists making invigorating, fresh work with honesty and integrity, as well as championing the tradition of Beauty and Colour in art from a primarily non-objective abstract position. It represents international painters, photographers and sculptors, both emerging onto the primary market and already established. The Gallery aims to champion the tradition of Beauty and Colour in art from a primarily non-objective abstract position. The auction in aid of Oxfam ended on July 25, with many works donated on behalf of the cause.
Gallery Violet launched in 2010, holding Pop-Up Exhibitions. They are also fund raising for the opening of a London gallery space this year.
