It doesn’t matter if you’re an artist, art buyer, or passer by. ArtBelow is bringing art to the masses in London – and it’s underground.
ArtBelow describe themselves as “a unique experience for artists from all backgrounds from the aspiring to the well established”. They offer artists the chance to have their artwork viewed by the huge cross range of society that use the London Underground – providing much needed publicity and exposure.
They also host a growing web based community where artists who take part in the campaign are invited to host their own webpage and act as useful selling tool to potential art buyers. Unlike traditional galleries the artist retains 100% of art sales relating to their original art work that is sold through the art below web site, and artists also receive 30% of all poster sales of their work made through Art Below Ltd.
The latest tube station where advertising space is turned into art space is Vauxhall, where Sue Cook of Eynsham is exhibiting her work as a poster until 12 March. But it gets more interactive than just the poster - Sue is now appealing to her viewers to take part in the project and needs 100 volunteers to send a picture of themselves in front of the London Underground poster to her. The pictures will then be used in Sue’s next “ambitious piece of artwork”. Sue says “I don't want to reveal too much detail about this venture yet as it’s still very much an underground project”... no pun intended. You can read more about it at her blog.
ArtBelow also turned the Harrods corridor at Knightsbridge tube station into an art gallery for a period of two months in 2006.
And art met life (and the artist) at Green Park earlier this year for another Private View.
