Kathleen Ferrier celebrated

The songs and wonderful voice of one of Britain’s most gifted contraltos are brought to life when Bridget Budge, accompanied by pianist Jonathan Ellis visits Square Chapel Centre for the Arts on Sunday 12 September to perform A Tribute to Kathleen Ferrier.

Lancashire born Kathleen Ferrier CBE came to prominence as a singer during and immediately after the Second World War, and was especially remembered for her courageous performances during her final illness prior to her death in 1953. Ferrier excelled, amongst many others, in the music of Bach and Schumann, and Bridget Budge includes pieces by both in this celebration, as well as songs by Lennox Berkeley, Gluck and Gurney.

Now based in Yorkshire, Bridget Budge graduated from Cambridge University, where she was a choral exhibitioner at Trinity College under Richard Marlow, and completed her singing studies in London at both the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and subsequently as the Opera Scholar at the Royal College of Music.

She has worked with Scottish Opera, covering such roles as Sosotris (Tippett The Midsummer Marriage), Suzuki (Puccini Madam Butterfly), Jocasta (Stravinsky Oedipus Rex) and singing Mamma Lucia (Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana). However, it is largely as a concert singer and recitalist that Bridget is known, having worked widely in England and in Germany. Highlights have included Elgar's Sea Pictures (conducted by the late Norman Del Mar), Verdi's Requiem Mass (conducted by Sir David Willcocks, Royal Albert Hall), and Beethoven's Choral Symphony (Guildford Philharmonic).
