A new collection entitled ‘North by North East: A Portrait of Newcastle and the North East of England’ is available to view at the BFI Mediatheque in QUAD from July. The new collection marks the latest new regional BFI Mediatheque at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. QUAD was the first regional venue to host a BFI Mediatheque, and has now been joined by regional BFI Mediatheque’s in Wrexham Library; Central Library Cambridge as well as Newcastle and the founding BFI Mediatheque at the Southbank in London.
The ‘North by North East’ collection pays tribute to England’s creative and diverse North East, with over 100 films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive and the Northern Region Film and Television Archive. The silent film records showing Scenes from a Suffragette Demonstration at Newcastle (1909), the Durham Miners’ Gala (1910) and The Building of the New Tyne Bridge (1928). Roman Polanski’s psychological thriller Cul-de-Sac (1966), filmed on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, rubs shoulders with Stormy Monday (1988), Mike Figgis’ breakthrough film mixing jazz and Newcastle gangland, starring local boy Sting. There’s TV ranging from Geordie comedy Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1988) and detective thriller Spender (1991) to the acclaimed drama Our Friends in the North (1996).
The BFI Mediatheque at QUAD offers a chance to discover a wealth of film and television from the BFI National Archive, arranged as a ‘digital jukebox’ of over 1,800 complete films and TV programmes, which are all available to watch for free.
The BFI Mediatheque is open daily and customers can just drop in or, for a specific time slot, book in advance via the QUAD Box office. Opening times are from 11:00am to 8:00pm, and Sundays 12 noon to 8:00pm.
