H.E President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia has expressed thanks to the Egyptian Embassy, which has established a new art competition for children as part of the Liberian-Egyptian Friendship Society (LEFS).
The “Egypt in the Eyes of the Children II” competition coincided with the launch of “The Children’s Law of Liberia” this month.
A number of government officials visited the Egyptian Embassy’s exhibition with the President, who commended the embassy for the program. The Daily Observer reports that she indicated unification for the children of Liberia as a result of the competition.
The competition was held at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium grounds and displayed more than 180 creative art from children from 17 schools in Monrovia and five other counties from rural parts of Liberia.
The Egyptian Ambassador Maher El-Adawy told the president that the objective of his government is to support young Liberians.
The competition saw Liberian children work together through group drawings, paintings and other artwork as well as building on talent and recognising potential in children.
200 children participated in the competition. They built pyramids with sugar cubes, created work from clay and discarded items.
Participants from Montserrado County included students from the following schools: American International School of Monrovia, Len Miller High School, Don Bosco Technical High School, Spiritan Academy, CDS, Manneka Children’s Football Club, ELWA Rock Hole Community, Samaritan Purse Home School, William Booth High School and the Mennonite School. Other schools, as well as embroidery, crocheting and football clubs from Bomi, Grand Gedeh, Margibi and River Cess counties also took part in the competition.
The event was made possible by UNICEF, who will also feature the children’s work in a forthcoming publication.
Liberia was also congratulated for passing an Act to establish Children’s Law in the country in September 2011. The Law was launched at the Children’s Festival this month.
