MEDIA RELEASE COURTESY OF: THE GALLERY
Sculptor Jeff Lowe has designed a radical modern tower. Attached to the six storey tower is a stunning Portuguese influenced Manor House. The Portuguese style building will house his studios whilst the tower will have studios, gallery, library and living space. Lowe believes the two merged styles will compliment each other and create a unique and inspirational space.
Lowe has restored many buildings over the years and has been working on his house and studio in Portugal for the last 18 years. Although recently constructed the property has been the subject of many articles with observers convinced that it dates back to the sixteenth century. The property has grown over years to resemble a village.
He was the first to receive live/work planning permission to convert a series of warehouses in Forest Hill into living and working spaces. He finished ‘no.6’ several years ago with living and gallery space to show his sculptures. He has now outgrown this and wants to incorporate his studio, living and showing space in one building. During the last two years Lowe has designed and restored a series of warehouses in Brockley, South East London to create a new living and showing space.
Lowe bought the site for the tower over two years ago and has been designing his new building since then. The building which will be the largest live/work building in London will feature modern technology throughout. The tower is a first for Lowe who has mainly restored and enhanced buildings, this is a new build and on a huge scale.
Jeff Lowe has been a full time sculptor for over thirty five years. His work has always had a strongly architectural theme. His sculptures are made in an organic way, responding and changing to what he sees, allowing accident and change as part of the direction of the work. His buildings have also been made in this way using older salvage and architectural elements incorporated into the construction. The design which is being submitted to ‘Grand Design’ has already received much interest and huge support from residents of Forest Hill.
Lowe came to prominence as a sculptor with his first one man show at the prestigious Leicester Galleries in London’s Cork St. Lowe was only twenty one and shortly after represented Britain in the Paris Biennale. Exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine were followed by many one man shows and numerous international exhibitions in Canada, Portugal, Australia and Holland.
Lowe was taught at St Martins by amongst others Sir Anthony Caro, Sir Philip King and William Tucker. Remaining true to his roots and always a ‘maker’ he has produced a vast body of work in many different materials.
A new exhibition of his work Building Space A Selection of Recent Sculpture and
Drawings brings together recent works by the International Sculptor Jeff Lowe for the first time since his major 2008 exhibition at the Robert Steele Gallery in New York. He came to prominence with his first one man show in 1974 at the prestigious Leicester Galleries in London’s Cork St.
Lowe was only twenty-one and shortly after represented Britain at the Paris Biennale. Exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine were followed by many one man shows and numerous international exhibitions in Canada, Portugal, Australia and Holland.
His new works draw on his experience of the last 35 years as a sculptor.
