$6M private art collection goes under hammer

One of Australia’s great private art collections – that of James Fairfax – goes under the hammer this month, potentially returning historic works to public holdings.

This stunning painting by Ralph Balson will be offered early in the sale. Lot 8, Constructive Painting (1953) Estimate: $120,000 – 160,000.

In January this year, Australia lost one of its great patrons to the arts, James Fairfax AC. Deutscher and Hackett is handling the sale of his art collection on behalf of the estate, which will be held in Sydney on 30 August at the National Art Gallery’s Cell Block Theatre.
